On or Off?

February 24, 2014

As I’ve said your wish is my command, the most poll answers I have received are leaning more towards etiquette for today’s post. Here is my take and share on etiquette today; I will be addressing hats the way Emily Post did in her book. Discussing hats are important because there are so many places where you may not be aware whether it should be on or off, we may not be aware of the differences between certain hats like a baseball cap and a women’s fashion hat. There is a rule for everything and for every place whether it should be on or off. Women’s fashion hats have been trending since the fall season, so it is always good to know the respectable rules.

Why remove your hat? It is a sign of respect! In the old days all kind of hats even king’s crowns were removed in places of worship. Unless assigned otherwise depending on specific beliefs where it is required to cover your head in certain religions.

For women as a rule of thumb – all fashionable hats can be on except in the office. In an office space, all kind of hats must  be off. If you are wearing a fashion hat where you are allowed to be; please be mindful of the people behind you if you are in a row setting where the audience are directed to a stage at the front.

The below picture  will help you understand the hat etiquette for both men and women.

I have worn hats, all kinds, for years, and it has been accepted at work that I wear them indoors as well. I suppose it depends upon the place and circumstances.

Could be! I guess that is just a general rule of thumb and if you are in a place where it accepts it – then that is fine and there are always exceptions to the rules. Etiquette differs from culture to culture and from different places. Not to mention that there is a dress code of conduct for most work places; that is where the rules are provided for work as well.
